ਰੋਮਨ ਚੈਰਟੀ ਦੇ ਸਿਰਲੇਖ ਅਧੀਨ ਪਿਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਪੁੱਤਰੀ ਦੇ ਲਾਸਾਨੀ ਪਿਆਰ ਅਤੇ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ਦੀ ਇੱਕ ਮਿਥਿਹਾਸ ਰੋਮਨ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ। ਕਥਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਬਿਰਧ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਦੇ ਸੀਮੋਨ ਨੂੰ ਰਾਜਾ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਉ ਨੂੰ ਗ਼ੈਰ-ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਢੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਦਫਨਾਉਣ ਬਦਲੇ ਮੌਤ ਦੀ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਸੁਣਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਗਈ ਸੀ। ਸੀਮੋਨ ਨੂੰ ਜ਼ੇਲ੍ਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੰਦ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ ਤੇ ਉਸਦੇ ਖਾਣ-ਪੀਣ ਉੱਪਰ ਪਾਬੰਦੀ ਲਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਗਈ ਸੀ ਤਾਂ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਭੁੱਖ ਨਾਲ ਤੜਫ਼-ਤੜਫ਼ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਤਿਆਗ ਦੇਵੇ।

ਬਿਰਧ ਸੀਮੋਨ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਰਾਤ ਨੂੰ ਉਸਦੀ ਪੁੱਤਰੀ ਪੀਰੋ ਜ਼ੇਲ੍ਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਿਲਣ ਲਈ ਜਾਇਆ ਕਰਦੀ ਸੀ। ਪੀਰੋ ਤੋਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਭੁੱਖ-ਪਿਆਸ ਨਾਲ ਬੇਹਾਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਨਾ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ। ਪਰ ਉਹ ਕਰ ਕੁੱਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਸਕਦੀ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਜ਼ੇਲ੍ਹ ਅੰਦਰ ਦਾਖਿਲ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਪਹਿਰੇਦਾਰ ਉਸਦੀ ਤਲਾਸ਼ੀ ਲਿਆ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਨ।

ਇੱਕ ਦਿਨ ਆਪਣੇ ਬੱਚੇ ਨੂੰ ਦੁੱਧ ਚੁੰਘਾਉਂਦਿਆਂ ਪੀਰੋ ਨੂੰ ਫੂਰਨਾ ਫੂਰਿਆ। ਅਗਲੀ ਰਾਤ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਗਈ ਤਾਂ ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਦੁੱਧ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਚੁੰਘਾਉਂਣਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਸੀ। ਇਹ ਸਿਲਸਿਲਾ ਹਰ ਰਾਤ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਅਰਸੇ ਤੱਕ ਚੱਲਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਜਦੋਂ ਕਈ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਤੱਕ ਸੀਮੋਨ ਦੀ ਮੌਤ ਨਾ ਹੋਈ ਤਾਂ ਜ਼ੇਲ੍ਹਰ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ੱਕ ਹੋਇਆ। ਉਸਨੇ ਸੀਮੋਨ 'ਤੇ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਸਖਤ ਪਹਿਰਾ ਲਗਵਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਤੇ ਪਹਿਰੇਦਾਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਪੀਰੋ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਦੁੱਧ ਚੁੰਘਾਉਂਦਿਆਂ ਫੜ ਲਿਆ ਸੀ। ਜਦੋਂ ਰਾਜੇ ਤੱਕ ਇਹ ਖ਼ਬਰ ਪਹੁੰਚੀ ਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਘਟਨਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਉਸਦਾ ਮਨ ਪਸੀਜ ਗਿਆ ਤੇ ਉਸਨੇ ਸੀਮੋਨ ਨੂੰ ਰਿਹਾਅ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਸੀ।

ਇਹ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਪੁਰਾਤਨ ਰੋਮਨ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ Factorum ac dictorum memorabilium (Nine Books of Memorable Acts and Sayings of the Ancient Romans) ਵਿੱਚ ਦਰਜ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਮਿਥਿਹਾਸਕ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਪੁਰਾਤਨ ਰੋਮਨ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕਾਰ ਵੈਲਰੁਸ ਮੈਕਸੀਮਸ ਨੇ ਆਧੁਨਿਕ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿੱਖ ਕੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਲਿਆਂਦਾ ਸੀ। ਸੌ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਯੂਰਪੀਅਨ ਅਤੇ ਖ਼ਾਸਕਰ ਰੋਮਨ ਚਿੱਤਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਇਸ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਕਲਾ ਦਾ ਵਿਸ਼ਾ ਹੁਣ ਤੱਕ ਬਣਾ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਹਨ।

रोमन चैरिटी के शीर्षक के तहत पिता और बेटी के प्यार और बलिदान की एक पौराणिक रोमन कहानी है। किंवदंती के अनुसार, सीमोन नामक एक वियक्ती को अपने पिता को अवैध रूप से दफनाने के लिए राजा द्वारा मौत की सजा सुनाई गई थी। सीमोन को कैद कर लिया गया और उसके भोजन पर प्रतिबंध लगा दिया गया ताकि वह भूख-पयास से मर सके।

हर रात जेल में बूढ़े सीमोन को मिलने के लिए उसकी बेटी, पीरो जईया करती थी। पीरो से, उसके पिता को भूख से मरते नहीं देखा गया था। लेकिन पीरो सहायता करने के लिए लाचार थी, क्योंकि पहरेदारों ने जेल में प्रवेश करने से पहले जेल की तलाशी ली थी।

एक दिन अपने बच्चे को स्तनपान कराते समय पीरो रोने लगी। अगली रात जब वह अपने पिता को देखने गई, तो उसने अपने पिता को अपना दूध चुँगना शुरू कर दिया। यह प्रक्रिया काफी समय तक चलती रही। जब सीमोन कई दिनों तक मरा नहीं था, तो ज़ेलर को संदेह हुआ। वह हर समय सीमोन पर चौकस नजर रखने लगा, और पहरेदारों ने पीरो को अपने पिता को अपना दूध पिलाते पकड़ लिया। जब यह खबर राजा तक पहुंची, तो वह इस घटना के बारे में सुनकर हैरान रह गया, उसका मन्न पसीज गया और उसने सीमोन को रिहा कर दिया।

यह कहानी प्राचीन रोमन ग्रंथ Factorum ac dictorum memorabilium (Nine Books of Memorable Acts and Sayings of the Ancient Romans) में निहित है। यह पौराणिक कहानी आधुनिक भाषा में प्राचीन रोमन इतिहासकार वेलारस मैक्सिमस द्वारा लिखी गई थी। अधिकांश यूरोपीय और विशेष रूप से रोमन चित्रकारों ने इस कहानी को अपनी कला का विषय बनाया है।

Cimon and Pero -Balraj Singh Sidhu

The story of Roman Charity is recorded in Factorum ac dictorum memorabilium (Nine Books of Memorable Acts and Sayings of the Ancient Romans) by the ancient Roman historian Valerius Maximus, and was presented as a great act of pietas (i.e., filial piety) and Roman honour. A painting in the Temple of Pietas depicted the scene. When the aged Cimon was forced to starve in prison before his execution, his devoted daughter Pero secretly visited her father to nourish him at her own breast. The ancient Roman historian Valerius Maximus presented Pero's selfless devotion as the highest example of honoring one's parent.

The actual ancient Roman story goes as follows:-

In one of the European country (Greece), an old man Cimon was sentenced to hunger death, he was put in Roman prison. The punishment was like that he would be put on hunger until his death. His daughter Pero came to know that her elderly father, Cimon is incarcerated for life and denied the benefit of food, so as to hasten his death.

She pleaded with the government to meet her father daily until his death. She was granted permission, she used to get checked by prison officers. So that she couldn’t bring any eatable items.

She can’t see the condition of her father like this. She looked at her father with the eyes of a caring mother. Pero would not have her father die in prison and instead offered him her breast-milk for sustenance. So, in order to make him alive, she used to feed him breast milk on daily basis in the prison cell.

When after so many days, the man was not dead. The security guards got suspicious and caught the girl breastfeeding her father. A case was registered against her, but her selflessness nature wins the heart of jailor and she wins the freedom of her father. Eventually, however, Cimon is released because the soldiers so admired Pero’s self-less charity and came to be known as Roman Charity.

A woman is full of love and sacrifice, whatever the role she is playing in one’s life sometimes she can be mother, sister, lover, wife etc.
